RE: Photos: Then & Now

I wouldn't mind betting that The Flying Fort passed through MH on occasions, we certainly know how some were so badly shot up and out of fuel coming back from Germany and having to pancake at nearby Sutton Heath sometimes with disastrous effects

Everyone will know the association of the Hawker Hurricane, Douglas Bader and Martlesham Heath. I once marshalled in [then] Group Captain Bader's Piper [??] aircraft at RAF El Adem, Libya, we were told in no uncertain terms to offer assistance to Sir Douglas who was refuelling his aircraft enroute to Egypt, if he didn't require assistance we were informed to withdraw, we did just that!

This is one of the type that Bader commanded and flew, these operated out of MH for a time, the Hurricane was probably the most stable gun platform in the RAF at that time and had a greater success of shooting down more enemy aircraft than any other RAF type

Duplicated thread

My thanks to Peter Cable for this photograph

Meteor VW411 was converted from a Mark IV to a T7 before being transferred to MH. Peter Cable is seen in the centre of the trio as a line flight mechanic at MH in 1951 (Peter Cable)

My thanks again to Peter CAble for allowing me to use this picture of DH Mosquito VX888 NF38 which is bristling with aeriels, this pic was taken in 1951. I can't be 100% sure but I think the very large aircraft beyond the Mossie is where Tesco's Extra Store is now situated perhaps someone could confirm, if this is correct the position of the Mossie would be where racing engines were developed in the 1960s which is on waste land between the BP garage and Topps Tiles
