The Bold and the Brave

We have had a famous Russian Prince stationed at Martlesham, we have names of legend, Bader, Stanford-Tuck, Malan, Johnson, Townsend associated with MH if you have any memories or photos you wish to share then please tell us about them

One only has to look in the MHAS Tower to see the signatures in the Black Tiles 'Legend' Book to see that we are following in the footsteps of Giants in Aviation

Its a shame nobody knows where the book is. The training manager at the Black tiles wrote to us last year asking about the book.
I believe it went to America

I guess I must have been fortunate in having been in the company of one or two names, I have mentioned elsewhere where I had contact with Douglas Bader at RAF ElAdem in the 1960's, I also had the opportunity of speaking to AVM 'Johnnie' Johnson the leading British 'Ace' of WWII, again this was at El Adem he flew his own AW Argosy in, I was on duty in White Overalls on 'VIP Steps' he had a quick word with two of us completely ignoring the entourage awaiting his arrival! smile.gif

I haven't got a picture of Johnson or anyone else but there are many memories of these people and one such [later] Spitfire Mark is based at Duxford bearing Johnson's call sign as below

Just imagine for one moment you could be transported back to a Flightline like this one some 65-70 years ago, what the talk in the Mess or the Barrack Blocks would be like or what might be in 'The Black Tiles' Book

Carolyn Grace and her son Nick plus The Grace Spitfire would certainly fit the bill on this topic too, The Grace Spit is nowadays housed at nearby Ben****ers and can be seen overflying the area.

This was Ms. Grace putting her Spit through a splendid display at Wattisham Airfield in July
