Prince Obolensky, a Russian Prince joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and was trained as a Pilot Officer and served with number 54 Squadron, sadly after a sortie in Hawker Hurricane Mark 1 his aircraft L1946 hit a ditch at the end of the runway. He was thrown forward and was killed he was aged 24 and is buried in Ipswich New Cemetery A statue stands in his memory in Cromwell Square, Ipswich celebrating his success as an England Rugby player
