Accident of Capt Eldon Troge as told by Ross Whitaker

I don't recall the whole story that my father told me about Capt. Troge's crash...what I seem to remember is that the plane was loaded with gas, something went wrong (I assume on take-off) and he went off the runway and flipped upside down...in the second picture(according to Dad) while crew were trying to get him out on one side, Troge had crawled out the other side and is seen standing on the far left smoking a cigarette...Dad said there was gas everywhere. The last picture is the side he got himself out from, the white stuff is foam, not snow. All I can say is that he was extremely lucky the plane and area didn't blow sky high!

I had the pleasure of meeting Eldon and his wife Inez back in 2002. His wife returned again two years ago and JC and myself met her at the CT,

Eldon passed away several years ago

The accident happened on Christmas Day 1944

44-11351 OC-I a P-51D-5 crash landed at Martlesham on 1st June 1945. I believe on take-off as plane had full load of fuel. Eldon lit up a gasper as he walked away from it!
