RAF Newmarket Heath [Rowley Mile]


Thursday I went past here on the A14, I was a passenger in a car and could see the Racecourse and Grandstand through the trees, did any of you know that the first flight of any jet aircraft to enter service in the UK took place here, it was unofficial regarding the Gloster Prototype, the aircraft lifted off and flew for some 7-10 seconds that was on July 10th 1942

The official flight took place a couple of weeks later at RAF Cranwell, so Suffolk can lay claim to that piece of history
