Squadrons & Units based at Martlesham Heath

I am undertaking some research on RAF Martlesham Heath, this base became the most Northern of Fighter Commands 11 Group Airfields during 1939, there was a total of 55 Squadrons based at Martlesham from 1917-63.

As number 1 [F] Squadron is the first in the list from the RFC days, 201 Squadron was the oldest RNAS Squadrons as No.1 RNAS but what I wish to know is that during 1944 [February 15th-April 3rd] Number 1 [F] Squadron was based at MH and was probably used as a forward operating base from RAF Acklington.

The aircraft operating at this time were probably Hawker Typhoons until being fully re-equipped with Supermarine Spitfires Mark XI's on 3rd/4th April 1944, can anyone help with any further information

My thanks to Mr Alan Smith Archivist MHAS for his assistance

The Spitfires quoted above XI's doesn't ring true as an ex member of No 1 Squadron has informed me today that they were Spitfires IXB's, the information was taken from the RAF Website!

John, No. 1 (F) Sqn was equipped with Typhoon 1Bs when at Martlesham,  It re-equipped with the Spitfire IXB after moving to North Weald in April 44.  The squadron never operated the Spit XI.

Info taken from 'RAF Squadrons' by Jeff Jefford.

Thanks Laurie, the IX and XI has obviously been transposed, I am surprised that the RAF Website has made such a fundamental error. I suspect that an outside source has compiled this information but then nothing is new as my old Squadron Number 29 had XXX's in place of XXIX painted on their kites many moons ago as a 'painting and doping' error
