Aircraft Accidents


Anyone with information of any aircraft that came to grief whilst operating out of Martlesham can you place them here please

20th July 1960 Chipmunk T10 WD305 was written off [Cat 5] after hitting an obstruction whilst taxiing on the airfield

Prince Obolensky, a Russian Prince joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and was trained as a Pilot Officer and served with number 54 Squadron, sadly after a sortie in Hawker Hurricane Mark 1 his aircraft L1946 hit a ditch at the end of the runway. He was thrown forward and was killed he was aged 24 and is buried in Ipswich New Cemetery A statue stands in his memory in Cromwell Square, Ipswich celebrating his success as an England Rugby player

August 14th 1921 a Bristol Braemar Serial C4297 crashed on take off and hit a hangar during trials, Pilot F/Lt O.M. Sutton and Onserver AC1 C. Sheridan sadly died

December 8th 1926 A Gloster Gamec0ck J7891 crashed whilst balancing its elevators a few minutes after take off, the pilot F/Lt G Wheatley was sadly killedDATE: December 8, 1926


January 23rd 1928 a Blackburn Turc0ck was performing a 'level speed trial' when it crashed the pilot F/Off H C G Dauncey was sadly killed

April 19th 1937, the prototype Vickers Wellington K4049 crashed after undertaking diving trials at Waldringfield, the pilot was able to escape but the observer Aircraftsman G P Southwaite sadly was killed

July 22nd, 1937 a Miles Magister L5012 crashed into The North Sea the pilot F/Lt E W Simmonds drowned after a mix up between an ASR launch and a Ferry as to who was going to the rescue
