RAF Bawdsey

The Guardroom, first building inside the gate, was the entrance to "the Hole".  Inside the Guardroom was another wire fence with a gate through which we passed thence down a couple of flights of stairs to the tunnel leading to the R3.

For those who recall the Guardroom at Bawdsey, it hasn't changed very much........

Ah so this is where the entrance to the hole was then Laurie, I don't suppose there was anything suspicious going on with a few dozen bods on a shift going into the guardroom and not appearing again for a few hours! smile.gif

No John, that is the guardroom into the domestic site.  There was a second guardroom inside the wire at the Tech site where the radars were.  The entrance to the hole was inside that one.

If you open the Secret Beses link and scroll down almost to the bottom, there is a photo headed:

Pilot's Eye view: Looking east over RAF Bawdsey's guardroom entrance to bunker

That photo shows the tech site guardroom, inside the gate, just to the left.  The buses we used from the domestic site pulled up outside that and then we all trooped into the GR and down the stairs to the R3.

Bawdsey [009931] (1024x685).jpgFrom the reverse above when leaving the old guardroom/manor you could only turn right on the road to Woodbridge, the bus shelter is opposite, the quay and ferry are to the left, the river is The Deben and those married quarters are just on the right past the barrier, to me it is an idyllic area, car parking is free on the quay and on the riverside
